MAINTAIN POSITIVE HEALTH IN THE WINTER – LET’S DO IT!

I wrote this post with people who live in parts of the world, where winter is cold, gloomy and bleak in mind. During the winter months, this is the time of year where many are susceptible to being the unhealthiest. While summer yielded endless days of blazing hot sunshine, women unveiled their bikini ready bodies whilst the men displayed their ripped physique.

The impact of summer on health

Summer is the quintessential time for putting our best foot forward. Our clothing shifts into a direction where the entire body is accentuated or exposed. It is also a time of year where people are more body conscious, be it comparing ourselves to the latest hot celebrity or observing the body type of our male or female counterpart(s). This combination of image awareness, soaring temperature and determination to look flawless enforces the notion of optimising good health.

From a psychological aspect, our emotional state elevates during the summer time. We have a tendency to be more sociable, do outdoor activities and frolic. In other words, we become much more motivated. I find it amazing how people (myself included) manage to accomplish more during the sunny days. Continue reading

In a research by Seventh Day Adventists published on the The Wall Street Journal here it is claimed that in a period of 6 years a diet study was conducted on 70,000 people. The researchers claim that “male vegetarians have a 12% lower chance of dying than meat-eaters”

However people who actually ate fish and even ate meat occasionally were added to the vegetarian group. When you take the fish-eaters and occasional meat-eaters and put them back to the meat-eating group, there is actually no difference in the life expectancy of vegetarians vs. meat-eaters. How to Enjoy Thanksgiving without Overeating, Binging or Feeling Guilty

Canadian Thanksgiving Is this weekend, and American Thanksgiving is not far behind!

Thanksgiving and other special occasions are usually events that are celebrated with food…and LOTS of it. It’s a time where we joke about bringing a pair of sweat pants so we can let our bellies purposely expand.

Do you feel fearful about losing control with food when it comes to celebrations?

  • Maybe you are scared that if you eat food that you normally view as “bad”, or a “big no-no” in your nutrition plan, you know you won’t be able to stop eating and eating.
  • If you count macros or calories, maybe you stress about how to keep track of your numbers if you do not know exactly how many calories, points, macros, etc grandma’s homemade food is.
  • Maybe you starve yourself all day just to save your calories for the huge Turkey Dinner, and then end up feeling painfully uncomfortable because you overate three times over.
  • Maybe you feel so guilty for eating so much food that the next day you over-exercise to work off all the “damage”.
  • You may find yourself increasingly anxious as Thanksgiving approaches, and you work extra hard at the gym so that you can allow yourself to eat the Turkey dinner.
  • You can’t stop focusing on the number on that scale, and you feel so anxious about gaining weight that you just stay so obsessed about not letting that number on the scale move up, and as a result, feel anxious and stressed overall.

What do all the above scenarios have in common? It all involves how much energy is revolved around your relationship with food and body image. I personally have suffered from all the above situations in the past, and it’s exhausting! So much energy is put into maintaining a certain number on the scale and a certain physique, and I thought the answer was just about what I put in my mouth. So I developed a rigid mindset where I only allowed myself to eat extremely clean foods and would punish myself with destructive self-talk if I ate something that was “not healthy”.

So I’m writing this post because if you can relate to the above situations, I’m reaching out to let you know that there’s hope and you can get out of this love-hate relationship with food.

Here are some guidelines on how to approach Thanksgiving in a proactive way:

  • Create a daily mindful ritual that helps you feel grounded first thing in the morning.
    • I personally apply my Young Living Essential Oils “Joy” and “Abundance” on, and say a positive affirmation that helps me feel into my Higher (Empowered) Self. I start my day in responding mode, rather than reacting mode.     • I suggest not to check your emails first thing in the morning because then you are setting yourself up for starting your day in reaction mode. This just creates stress.
  • Eat normally as if you would everyday. Nourish your body, eat regular macro-nutrient balanced meals throughout the day.
  • Drink lots of water throughout the day, you can squeeze fresh lemon in there for improving your digestion and flavour. You can also use Young Living Essential oils in here such as lime, lemon or grapefruit.
  • Move your body because you are respecting it, not because you fear food, fear body fat or are punishing your body.
  • When it comes to the actual celebration meal, here are some ways to prep:
    • Mentally: Prep yourself by telling yourself that the focus is about staying in JOY and CONNECTION with others. Put the social in the foreground, and food in the background.  Give yourself permission to enjoy the food – do not worry about staying within your macros, calories, points, etc. The more stress you put on yourself, the less you will enjoy the overall experience. Thanksgiving is a time to truly focus on gratitude- be thankful for all that you have in your life, keep this as the focus.
    •  Emotionally: Take deep breaths, if you have time, engage in your morning ritual by stating your affirmation and breathing in and applying essential oils, bring them with you as tools to soothe. Or if you don’t use oils, have an image of something calming to come back to in your mind when you start to feel stressed or anxious.
    • Physically: Eat mindfully and slowly, really let yourself savour the food.
    • Spiritually: Stay in connection with yourself, checking in with your level of anxiety and calming down if you notice the anxiety is rising.

The Popularity of Artificial Sweeteners

We are all becoming more educated about reducing the total quantity of sugar in our diet for our better health, but are the sweetener-alternatives any better?  According to EatingWell.com, the artificial and sugar substitute industry is growing, topping $18 billion in 2019!  But do the artificial alternatives to sugar cause more sugar addiction and health problems?

sugar and sweetenersYou will find artificial sweeteners in the most inconspicuous packaged products. You expect them added to diet sodas, flavored yogurts, low-calorie ice cream, and diet candies. But would you expect them in fat-free salad dressings, high-fiber cereals, ketchup, or bread? When you add it all up in this product, that lunch, this snack; the quantity accumulates real fast.

Identifying Sweeteners in Your Food

  • aspartame,
  • acesulfame potassium,
  • saccharin,
  • supra lose, and
  • neotame.

You should also know the names of ‘natural’ sweeteners:

  • stevia leaf extract,
  • monk fruit extract,
  • and sugar alcohols such as erythritol,
  • and xylitol.

When looking at the ingredient listing of a product, look for these ingredients. All of these sweeteners have been FDA-approved, but there is some controversy from organizations such as the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) which question the impact all these additives on a body’s long-term health.

So Are Sweeteners Healthy or Not?

One study will prove that in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle they do help you reduce your overall sugar intake. Then there are opposing studies that say that those who consume sugar substitutes aren’t leaner, and are sometimes heavier!  What’s the solution?

Many nutritionist recommend utilizing sugar for sweeter swaps moderately and include more whole, unprocessed foods to your diet. Many people with gut sensitivity may increase their health symptoms if they consume aspartame, sucralose or saccharin. I personally had a doctor recommend this to me to improve my chronic digestive symptoms.

According to Joyce Hendley, Americans ingest a staggering 140 pounds of sugar substitutes annually. Any effort to improve reducing that number is health-beneficial.

Food Is NOT the Enemy, Self-Bullying Is!

I want to talk to you about food. For many of you, food creates tension, confusion, love/hate, pleasure, guilt, shame, and secrecy.However, food is never the enemy.

Society Is to Blame

Food is neither good or bad but we as a society have assigned moral values to food. So what happens is that when you eat a food, you believe is “bad”, then you consciously and unconsciously see yourself as a bad person for eating that food.

Yes, there is scientific research that states that specific foods are “good” for you and other kinds of foods are “bad” for you because of their nutritional profile. However, I invite you to be a food scientist, and rather than seeing things as good or bad, to ask yourself: ‘Does this food serve me or not?’

Good Food Versus Bad Food -You Decide

healthy fruit saladThe best educator if a food is going to serve you or not is you and your body! To determine if a food serves you or not ask yourself the following questions before you eat the food (as a baseline), and right after you eat the food, two hours after you eat it, and the next morning.
  1. How are my energy levels? Low, moderate, or high?
  2. How is my mental clarity? Do I have brain fog or am I able to focus and concentrate? Is my mental clarity sharp?
  3. How is my mood: irritable, stable, or angry?  (note: Not the same as how you are feeling about eating that food because your answer will always be guilt).
  4. How is my digestive health: bloated, clear, or constipated?
  5. How did I sleep last night?
Track these questions every time you eat your “forbidden food”. You will see if there are actually negative effects on your inner health. Do not focus so much on what you think and know about the food  based on what you have learned about it from outside resources. Be a food scientist and use yourself as the subject.

People React Differently to Food

good and bad foodHow certain food affects one person may have a very different effect on another person. For example, my husband can eat granola and not have sugar hangover, whereas for me, when I have granola (in appropriate serving size), my belly starts to hurt and my head starts to spin. So if I choose to eat granola, I make it a conscious decision that I am also choosing to accept the consequences. That means I will not beat myself up for enjoying it and experiencing the negative effects on my body afterwards. I take it for what it is and move on.
You may be surprised to learn that what you thought was bad for you, may actually not have any negative impact on you. Sometimes, however, it may confirm that it does! Ultimately, this is how you can start neutralizing your food and stop seeing food as good or bad.
Food is not the enemy…bullying yourself is!
Food is just food.  You can change your story. You can change the way you respond to food, regardless of what it is.

High Protein Snack Recipe: Chia Seed Pancakes

In recent years, pancakes have evolved from a sugar and carb-laden breakfast staple to a versatile post-workout snack. Fitness buffs and healthy eaters everywhere have developed a multitude of healthy recipe variations to take pancakes from a sweet treat to a nutritional powerhouse. From banana pancakes and protein pancakes to berry pancakes and matcha pancakes, there’s a recipe for every breakfast-lover. The following variation uses protein powder to turn pancakes into a high-protein snack that’s ideal for muscle recovery post-sweat session.

Chia Seed Pancakes

Vanilla Chia Seed Protein Pancakes

Pancake Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp whole wheat flour
  • 2 tbsp almond flour
  • 3 tbsp vanilla protein powder
  • 1/2 tsp baking powder
  • dash of salt
  • 1/2 tsp chia seeds
  • 1 egg
  • 2 tbsp almond milk

Topping Ideas:

  • nuts
  • melted nut butter
  • cacao nibs
  • berries
  • chia seeds
  • greek yogurt
  • shredded coconut



Directions:

Spray pan/griddle with non-stick spray and turn heat to medium.

Combine all the dry ingredients in a bowl (whole wheat flour, almond flour, protein powder, baking powder, salt, chia seeds).

Add in wet ingredients (egg, almond milk) and stir together. Protein powders vary in consistency–add more almond milk if needed to thin the batter.

Measure and pour 2 tbsp of batter into pan/griddle to form each pancake. Once it starts to bubble on top and brown on the bottom, flip and cook the other side. Each pancake will take about 4 minutes total (2 minutes per side).

Serve with your toppings of choice.

*Make this recipe faster by prepping dry ingredients and setting aside the night before.

Having nutritious snacks after a workout can make or break the successful achievement of your fitness goals. Experts recommend noshing on foods that are high in protein within 30 minutes post-workout in order to reap the most benefits for muscle recovery. These 15-minute pancakes are a great option to prepare and enjoy within that time window for optimal refueling!

Mashed and Riced Cauliflower

I Mashed and Riced Cauliflower – This Is What Happened!

Mashing cauliflowerFinding alternative uses for vegetables keeps your taste buds guessing, and boosts your nutrition!  Cauliflower contains sulforaphane, which acts as an antioxidant and helps detox your system utilizing enzymes. Cruciferous vegetables are believed to lower risk of cancer due to these beneficial sulforaphanes.

Ricing or mashing cauliflower allows you to mold the flavors you desire while still tasting like a traditional comfort food.  Tweak this recipe by adding your own preferences for spice level and ingredients.  Enjoy with beef, roast chicken, or baked halibut.

Ingredients:

-1 large head of cauliflower. Rinse, pat dry, and chop into florets, discarding the thick core.
-I rinsed can BPA free garbanzo beans (I prefer to use organically)
-1 cup low-sodium chicken stock. You can use vegetable stock if you prefer.
-olive oil cooking spray (or avocado oil cooking spray)
-8 oz brown button mushrooms, sliced
-1 yellow onion, chopped
-3 garlic cloves, rinsed
-1/4 sea salt or Kosher salt
-1/4 tsp fresh ground pepper
-2 tbsp fresh lemon juice
-11/2 ounce Pecorino Romano cheese (divided)
-1/2 cup chopped parsley (flat or curly- be sure to wash)
– 3 tsp olive oil (I prefer a flavored oil such as Mediterranean or basil olive oil)
*For more spice, add red pepper flakes in addition to the pepper, or sub a Chipotle olive oil instead of plain or flavored oil.  You can also add fresh thyme and reduce the parsley by that same amount

How To Cook:

Ricing Cauliflower

1. Divide cauliflower into 2-3 sections. Add chopped cauliflower into the food processor one at a time. Pulse until the pieces are the size of rice.  Transfer to a large bowl and continue process till it’s all ‘riced’.

2. In a blender, add rinsed beans and chicken stock. Process until smooth.

3. Add chosen cooking spray to a pan and heat on medium heat. Add cleaned mushrooms and onions. Cook for 5-7 minutes stirring often, till they are lightly browned. Add chopped garlic, salt & pepper and cook 1 minute. Add the lemon juice, increase the heat to medium-high and cook, stirring occasionally until liquid has evaporated.

4.  Pour blended bean broth purée into the pan. Gently fold till it’s well mixed, cover and cook over medium for 10 minutes.  Stir occasionally.

5. Uncover and reduce heat to low. Stir in 1/2 ounce cheese. Turn off heat and stir in parsley.  Divide portions amount plates. Drizzle with oil and remaining cheese.

Serving-1 1/2 cups cauliflower
Calories-240,  Total Fat-15g, Sodium- 180mg
